Election Systems & Services (ES&S) AutoMARK Ballot Marker

Sample Audio Instructions (mp3 file)

How to Vote on This Machine:

1. You may vote using the touch screen, the audio ballot option with keypad (touch screen can be turned on or off), or a dual-input personal device such as “sip and puff”. When the screen instructions or the audio voice prompts you to Please Insert Your Ballot, feed the blank ballot slowly into the ballot feed tray. Read or listen to the instructions for voting on the Voting Instructions Screen, then press NEXT.
2. The Contest Screen displays the ballot contests and is read for your consideration. Select the candidate name or the oval next to their name to indicate your selection. A filled in oval next to the name of your choice displays. To de-select your choice, press the name or issue again. Press NEXT to move to the next ballot page. Over-voting, or selecting too many choices in a given contest, is prevented automatically.
3. The Summary Screen appears when you have gone through the ballot. Review this screen to confirm your selections. No selections have been marked on your paper ballot yet. To change any selection, press the contest on the Summary Screen, touch your original selection to de-select it, then touch your new choice and press NEXT to return to the Summary Screen.
5. Press NEXT when the selections are correct, then press Mark Ballot on the Mark Ballot Selection Screen to print your selections onto the ballot. When the screen displays Remove Ballot, remove your ballot from the Ballot Feed Tray.
6. To verify your marked ballot, insert it into the ballot feed tray. Press NEXT on the screen or the RIGHT arrow on the keypad to go to the Verification Summary screen. Review the selections that are marked on your ballot. When done reviewing your selections, press EXIT. When the screen displays Remove Ballot, remove your ballot. If you wish to make changes, ask for a new ballot. Insert your marked ballot in the scanner.

REMEMBER: You have the right to ask for assistance from a poll worker during the voting process. If the poll worker is unable to resolve any machine-related problem you might have, do not cast your ballot on the machine. You have a right to vote on a system that is working. If none is available, an alternative – such as an emergency paper ballot – should be provided.

If you have any problem voting, call 1-866-OUR-VOTE for help!

  • "The core of our American democracy is the right to vote. Implicit in that right is the notion that that vote be private, that vote be secure, and that vote be counted as it was intended when it was cast by the voter. And I think what we're encountering is a pivotal moment in our democracy where all of that is being called into question." (more here)
